SMPS New York recently hosted “Humans at the Helm: Guiding AI in Proposal Management,” a virtual program that expanded on one of the most talked-about sessions from the 2026 SMPS Northeast Regional Conference. The event brought together AEC marketing and proposal professionals for a deeper discussion on how artificial intelligence is reshaping proposal management while reinforcing the enduring value of human judgment, strategy, and creativity.

Presented by Jen McGovern, FSMPS, CPSM, of VHB and Jeffrey Taub, FSMPS, CPSM, of AKRF, the session explored the growing role of AI in proposal development through the lens of four core attributes: responsiveness, quality, strategy, and creativity. Drawing from their experience in firms of different sizes and at different stages of AI adoption, the presenters offered practical insight into how marketers can use emerging tools while continuing to lead with perspective, discernment, and client understanding.

Throughout the program, attendees considered how AI can streamline repetitive tasks such as compliance review, outlining, and copy editing, allowing proposal professionals to devote more time to higher-value work. The discussion emphasized that while AI can support efficiency, it cannot replace the human ability to interpret client expectations, shape compelling narratives, identify differentiators, and bring authenticity to the final product.

The program also underscored the importance of continued skill development as the profession evolves. Participants were encouraged to build their capabilities in strategic thinking, storytelling, quality control, and creative problem-solving so they can remain indispensable as technology advances. By focusing on these foundational strengths, proposal managers can move beyond simply adapting to AI and instead help shape the future of the profession.

Through programs like this, SMPS New York continues to provide meaningful professional development opportunities that help AEC marketers navigate change, strengthen their impact, and stay connected to the issues shaping the industry.
