This month, we’re excited to spotlight Marlene Pérez, a Marketing Coordinator at Dewberry whose passion for collaboration, storytelling, and continuous learning has shaped her nearly six-year career in the A/E/C industry. An active member of the SMPS-NY Communications Committee and a CPSM candidate, she values the connections, shared experiences, and professional growth that SMPS has provided. From embracing new opportunities to drawing strength from her personal journey, Marlene’s story is one of resilience, curiosity, and a commitment to growing both personally and professionally.

Please introduce yourself! What is your current role and company? How many years’ experience do you have?
Hello! I’m Marlene Pérez, a Marketing Coordinator at Dewberry, a planning, design, and construction firm. I support the Northeast regional marketing team, primarily within the transportation market.
I have nearly six years of experience in the A/E/C industry, including the last two and a half years with Dewberry. My work focuses on supporting strategic pursuits, business development efforts, and marketing initiatives that help connect our teams with new clients and projects.
From coordinating industry events to developing client-facing materials and supporting proposals and prequalification efforts, I enjoy bringing people, ideas, and possibilities together.
I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from the University of North Florida (Go Ospreys!), with minors in Digital Marketing & Analytics and International Business.
What inspired you to join SMPS and become a part of the communications committee?
I was first introduced to SMPS through my firm and began attending SMPS-NY events alongside colleagues who encouraged me to get involved. After a few events, I realized it was more than networking, it was a space where conversations felt familiar and purposeful. Being surrounded by professionals who shared similar challenges and perspectives created an environment that was both energizing and inspiring. Joining the Communications Committee felt like a natural extension of my interests in digital marketing, storytelling, and design. It provided an opportunity to contribute in a meaningful way while continuing to learn, collaborate, and stay engaged with a community that consistently encourages growth and fresh thinking.
What are you hoping to gain from your SMPS membership?
What I value most is the opportunity to learn from professionals across all stages of their careers. Exposure to different perspectives, strategies, and approaches has been incredibly valuable in shaping how I think about marketing in the A/E/C industry.
Through my membership, I aim to continue building strong relationships, expanding my industry knowledge, and refining my skills. I’m also focused on staying engaged, contributing where I can, and continuing to evolve as a marketing professional.
Which SMPS events or opportunities are you most looking forward to? What events do you think will best support your professional development?
I am currently working toward my CPSM certification and have found the MARKENDIUM to be a meaningful part of that journey. It has not only strengthened my technical knowledge but also reinforced the strategic role marketing plays within our industry.
Some of the most impactful experiences have come from conversations with peers, learning how others approach challenges, making decisions, and navigating their careers in A/E/C marketing. Those moments have offered practical insights and new perspectives that I apply in my day-to-day work.
I’m also looking forward to expanding my involvement, including volunteering on the SMPS Northeast Regional Conference (NERC) 2027 Planning Committee. Opportunities that bring together diverse voices and experiences continue to be especially valuable, creating space for shared ideas, thoughtful dialogue, and professional growth.
What’s a project or accomplishment you’re especially proud of?
As a first-generation Latina, born and raised in the Dominican Republic, one of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is earning my bachelor’s degree after moving to the United States during my senior year of high school.
That transition came with its challenges, but it also shaped who I am today. It taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of believing in myself even in unfamiliar situations.
I carry a deep sense of pride in my roots and in the journey that brought me here. Looking back, that moment represents so much more than a degree, it reflects growth, perseverance, and the courage to embrace new beginnings. It continues to inspire me as I evolve, both personally and professionally.
Outside of career-life, what are some hobbies or adventures you like to have?
Growing up as a Girl Scout played a big role in who I am today. It sparked my curiosity, creativity, and love for adventure, and I still find myself naturally drawn to new experiences and small moments of discovery.
I genuinely enjoy exploring, whether that means traveling somewhere new or simply finding a cozy coffee shop or a great restaurant with outdoor seating. I’ve always appreciated the little details that make a place feel special and memorable.
Photography is another passion of mine that brings me joy. Capturing everyday moments, beautiful scenery, and meaningful memories allows me to slow down, stay present, and appreciate the things that often go unnoticed.
Above all, I’m deeply family-oriented. Growing up in a large, and close family taught me the importance of spending quality time with loved ones, something I continue to value today. When I’m not out exploring, you can usually find me gathering inspiration for home décor and interior design projects or scrolling on TikTok.
