The Art of Volunteering

Multi-tasking, being multi-dimensional and possessing the knack to pivot in unforeseen circumstances is the core of what being a successful Proposal Marketing professional is all about. But what about the fulfillment of putting your natural talent to benefit professional organizations for the greater good?

You see, while volunteering comes natural to some, it may be a fear for others.  In my experience, your mindset must span across numerous dimensions to prepare you for the good and the not so good. Sometimes it requires you to take a self-assessment and reflect on your current duties. The beauty of SMPS is that there are like minded individuals who are all willing to help you succeed.

If your current job description does not include specific attributes, here’s where your talents can be put to good use.  If you are great at event planning, then join the Events Committee.  If you are on a track to a leadership role, but stumble across roadblocks at your current organization to advance, then put your skill set to use and join the Leadership Committee.  If Professional Development is at the forefront and public speaking, learning better busines practices and growing both personally and professionally, then the Professional Development Committee welcomes you.  As the new Chair of the Professional Development Committee, I am grateful for the excellent examples that former SMPS-NY Chairs have laid out.  The best part of taking on something new, is that there are members who have been in the same shoes who can provide guidance at any time.  Some benefits to volunteering with SMPS-NY include:

  • Putting your hidden talents to good use
  • Networking with members who are in the same professional space
  • Personal branding and professional fulfillment
  • Growing professionally with members and constant support
  • Staying true to the principles and goals of the organization

For this upcoming SMPS-NY new year, I welcome you all to shoot your shot, aim high, and practice what you aim to reach -  and join a committee today!
