SMPS-NY’s Long Island Affiliate welcomed a strong group of AEC marketing and business development professionals to our April Knowledge Exchange: Proposals, hosted by H2M architects + engineers in Melville. The evening brought together peers – from younger professionals to experienced mentors - from across the industry for a collaborative, insight-filled discussion focused on one of the most critical drivers of growth: proposals.
The program began with a presentation from H2M Proposal Manager Pattyann Bryant, CPSM, who shared practical strategies for building stronger, more effective proposals - from early-stage planning through final close-out. Attendees explored what it takes to position for success, including how to organize pursuit efforts, craft clear and compelling responses, and prepare teams for impactful interviews. Liz Kupcha, CPSM, also lent her expertise and perspective to the conversation, helping to foster an engaging and collaborative exchange of ideas among attendees.
A key theme throughout the conversation was intentionality - starting with the go/no-go decision process. From informal gut checks to more structured approaches like Shipley Method with color-coded review teams, the group discussed how internal dynamics and relationships can sometimes influence pursuit decisions, and how greater rigor can lead to better outcomes. The conversation also emphasized the importance of storytelling within proposals: using concise, purposeful language and strong visuals to improve information retention and clearly differentiate your firm’s expertise.
Interview preparation was another standout topic, with a shared best practice emerging loud and clear - rehearse at least three times! This level of preparation helps teams refine messaging, build confidence, and deliver a more cohesive and compelling presentation when it matters most.
The discussion didn’t stop at submission. Pattyann also highlighted the value of thoughtful proposal close-out, including updating CRM systems with detailed pursuit data to inform smarter, more strategic decisions in the future.
The group also touched on upcoming SMPS-NY events including the Bootcamp program for CPSM certification and Humans at the Helm: Guiding AI in Proposal Management – exciting programs designed to elevate both individual careers and team performance.
As always, the Knowledge Exchange format created space for open dialogue, peer learning, and meaningful connection. With perspectives shared across firms of all sizes and disciplines, the evening reinforced just how valuable it is to step away from day-to-day deadlines and learn from one another.
If you’re looking to sharpen your skills, expand your network, and stay ahead in an increasingly competitive industry, SMPS-NY events are designed with you in mind. Join us at an upcoming program to gain practical insights, build lasting relationships, and invest in your professional growth. We’d love to see you there!
